So, now you're working from home?

Life has changed with the coronavirus and many of us have now moved our office to home for an unknown period of time.  How can we make a healthy transition and still stay connected?

Business owners and entrepreneurs have probably got this all sorted.  However, as a newbie in this space, in Week One I've discovered a few tips that can help make this a more successful transition.

Establish good habits:

  • Maintain a consistent routine each day. Set your alarm to get up at the same time, as if you are travelling to work.  Use the extra time and opportunity to go for a walk (if permitted) before your day begins. Physical movement gets the brain and body integrated, oxygenated and alert.
  • Separate your work area from your home living area. This helps to create a balance of energy and a defined area to concentrate on your work, as well as a place to relax that's not associated with your work.
  • Log in to your workspace the same time every morning. Routine and structure helps to increase productivity and create accountability for yourself and your colleagues during work hours.
  • Take your 'full' lunch break away from the workspace so you are rested and replenished. If you have the opportunity, go outside for fresh air and move around. Stick to the scheduled lunchtime in your calendar so your colleagues know when to expect you back at your desk.

Staying connected to increase inspiration, motivation and mental wellbeing.

Some of us are happy in our own space, and energised in the quietness of our own company. However, others thrive on connection for inspiration and motivation. We are social beings, and so connecting with others is important for our mental and emotional wellbeing.

If you are feeling isolated or lonely without your colleagues close by for that quick chin-wag, coffee-break or office walk-about, schedule a few minutes during your day to connect with a 5 minute phone call, or catch up over a video conference call for a team huddle.

Be smart with your time. This is a great opportunity to practice your organisational skills, as well as your communication skills.

Your workspace:
  • Where possible, position yourself near natural light and fresh air, such as an open window. This will energise you and help you to think more clearly.
  • Use a comfortable chair, desk and screen that is ergonomically set up for good posture and mental focus. Avoid sitting slumped on the couch, bed or floor, so you don't end up with aching muscles in your back and neck.
  • Add a few items to your work area that make you feel good eg: an indoor plant, a favourite photo, or even crystals to create good energy around your work space.
  • Keep your desk free of used plates and cups, and unnecessary clutter. A clear space helps to create clear thinking.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and to avoid headaches & afternoon fogginess.
  • Eat healthy snacks regularly and avoid junk foods, to maintain your energy and to feel alert.
  • Get up from your desk every 30-45 minutes to stretch and move around.
  • Take your full break at lunch-time and move away from the work area
.  Now that you are eating at home (and not at the local cafe), plan healthy lunches you enjoy, rather than settle for stale boxed leftovers or the dregs at the bottom of the fridge. Think of the money you are also saving!
  • Finish your workday at the same time every day. Pack away your laptop and paperwork (as you would in the office), as a sign that ‘work’ has finished for the day.
  • Now relax. Move away from your workspace to switch your focus after a productive day.

Lastly, exercise self-compassion and kindness toward others during these unusual times as we manage the restrictions we are experiencing during the coronavirus pandemic.  Using common sense for your health and wellbeing will help to keep your spirits raised and ensure your productivity whilst working from home.  It's also important we stay connected through alternative means, so we can continue to support each other and maintain a sense of hope and normalcy.

What WFH tips have you discovered this week that work for you?
