We all experience storms in life. When they arrive, we can be tempted to duck for cover rather than see the amazing opportunity for progress and evolution. Self-reflection and self-assessment are essential if we want to see improvement. But where do we begin? When we’re going through periods of transition in our lives, we must embrace the process of self-reflection and self-assessment.
Perhaps we are driven towards change and self-improvement, or it may be thrust upon us due to an event or a situation that’s occurred. To make the most of this time, especially if we are looking to learn from our current situation, it’s best to seek to learn more about ourselves. A significant event in our personal life, in a relationship, or a work situation, can be a great opportunity to discover more about how we typically respond. Pausing to reflect is necessary for change. When we do a self-check we can notice what we’re saying to ourselves about the situation.
To experience progress in our lives, self-assessment is an effective tool. This is about self-awareness, not self-criticism. Using a scale to assess where we see ourselves today, our level of progress, achievement or sense of fulfilment, can be useful for comparing and measuring ourselves in a month, six months or a year. You may rate yourself from 0-10 for progress. Or you may prefer to use a pie graph to illustrate how much time, energy and resources you are giving to different areas of your life. Where are the gaps and what would you like to prioritise in your life? Self-assessment can help us to see whether we have improved our coping skills, our communication, and our ability to self-manage our evolution. This is about doing what’s needed to lead our own life. Sometimes we may not want to take an honest look at where we are today, for fear of not liking what we see. Change, however, can only occur when we recognise that we are the creator of our lives. If we can honestly assess where we are today, to grow and improve our lives, then we know what to work on. Storms in life happen, though not to undermine us or create unhappiness. They are opportunities for us to clear out what’s not needed, take stock, and focus on what we want to create more of in our lives. Ask yourself what matters most to you and be prepared to leave everything else behind. Storms don’t last forever. The clouds of confusion dissipate when we do what’s necessary. Clarity comes when we take the first step forward. This can be a period of self-exploration, and trying new things. Change does not happen when we stay exactly where we are today. Self-assessment and a strategy for moving towards more of what resonates with your values, so you can do more of what you most love, will give you the change and progress you are seeking.
